“Active Shooter” Exercise at High School

Public Safety, along with Mexico Schools and various emergency agencies will be conducting an “active shooter” exercise at the High School today from 4pm -6pm.

According to a statement from Public Safety, the exercise will simulate an active shooter in the school,and the subsequent emergency response. The exercise will involve numerous people and vehicles and it would be best to avoid the area during this period of time.

Spring Clean Up Starts April 7 in Mexico, MO

Oh yes, it’s time to watch the the scavengers race throughout the night in search of somebody else’s trash…er, treasures!

Mexico’s Annual Spring Cleanup will be held on Saturdays during the month of April. If your regular trash pickup day is Monday or Thursday, your clean up day will be Saturday, April 14th, if your regular trash pickup day is Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday, your clean up day will be Saturday, April 7th.

So, start cleaning out that garage!

New Shop Area for Welding Program

The teaching of welding just got cleaner, safer and more efficient at the Hart Career Center, thanks to a new location for the program which includes improved equipment. The program, which has been in its original facility since the career center opened in 1968, is moving into the area vacated by the Agriculture Diesel program which moved into the Ag Complex.

The facility offers three times the amount of space (15 individual welding booths) and was financed through a state of Missouri Enhancement Grant, which pays 50 percent of the cost of building improvements and 75 percent of equipment costs.

Gary Leonard’s Passing

It’s with a sad heart that I report the news that Gary Leonard has passed away this evening at Boone Hospital due to complications from his lung surgery.

I just spoke to Gary’s son-in-law who relayed that the family appreciates the prayers and support of their friends during this time. Arrangements will be made through Arnold Funeral Home in Mexico, MO.

Gary ran a Mexico, Missouri news site www.MexicoMaxim.com, which he entrusted to me to keep updated with news of his condition while he was in the hospital.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to Gary’s wife and family.

I’ll share more information on MexicoMaxim.com when I hear from the family again tomorrow.

Yard Waste Site Hours

Ah, spring is near in Mexico, Missouri! It’s almost time to mow, rake and trim stuff in our back yards.

The city has announced new hours for yard waste dropoff. The Braik Brothers Yard Waste Site at 104 South Kentucky will be open Monday through Friday; 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This is a free drop off site for Residential and Commercial Yard Waste.

Curbside pick-up can also be scheduled for a fee by calling 573-474-7336.

Freeman To Take Over Superintendent Post
